About Us

THE MENDOZA JUACHON’S

Welcome to Between Countries, our blog about living in the Philippine Islands. We are on a journey to explore our parents home country. My husband and I are first generation Filipino-American, born and raised in California. We have two children Basilio, 13 and Anais, 8. We decided  to move to the Philippines to immerse ourselves in the languages, culture and environment of our heritage. The blog title “Between Countries” is a nod to our diaspora experience.

Home base for the year will be the city of Bacolod on the island of Negros. Follow us here as we learn about this amazing part of the Philippines. We’ll throw in some fun stories and photos while we’re at it.

9252 Miles to Buglas

Happy 2018 ya'll! It's been about 2.5 months since we left the United States and it  feels much longer. We've logged many miles and everyday brings a new adventure. Within our first month in the Philippines, we travelled 9252 miles - by airplane, ship, bus, car, taxi, tricycle and foot - whew! We spent our first week in Manila deflating from the big move and adjusting to the time difference. We caught up

White Supremacy Rears its Head in Christian School Education

One of the trickiest things to figure out when we arrived in the Philippines was where to send the kids for school. We already knew, based on our research and anecdotes from friends that options would be extremely slim in Bacolod. Our choices were public school or religious private schools (most private schools are non-secular.)  Before we left the US, we tried to prepare the kids for what to expect - the uniforms,
